In Defense of … LMFAO’s “Party Rock Anthem” – Dallas Music – DC9 At Night

This is the first of my new column “In Defense of…”. Where I extol, in my editor’s words, the redeemable aspects of pop music. I revel at this challenge.

I think a lot of of today’s pop music borrows sounds and techniques from a few genres I mixed as a radio DJ just a couple of years ago. You hear a bit of industrial in Lady Gaga, electroclash in Robyn and chiptune in Kesha. Also, dubstep has changed drastically and grown immensely popular from when I started mixing it on my show.

While I don’t have a background in music theory, I feel that my DJing prepared me well for this environment. There will be pop tunes on the charts that fits my broad but picky taste. After all, the captains of pop music make things that appeal to all demographics.
