Over The Weekend: Fear Factory at the House of Blues – Dallas Music – DC9 At Night

Over The Weekend: Fear Factory at the House of Blues – Dallas Music – DC9 At Night.

Here’s a story. In fifth grade, a schoolbus buddy gave me  his copy of the Mortal Combat Soundtrack because his parents didn’t approve of non-Christian music in their house. They didn’t even hear the album by his account, or hear about the violent game it was based on. They just disapproved of the dragon symbol, a sign of Confucian paganism.

I can trace my taste in music today back to bands that appeared on that album; KMFDM, Orbital, Napalm Death, Juno Reactor, and Fear Factory.

The band’s cyberpunk and industrial aesthetic was a great influence on my visual and literary tastes. Hearing the band come out to Toto’s Dune theme was an awesome touch. Herrera’s breakbeats influenced me to take up drumming during my teen years, and still motivates my interest in Drum n’ Bass and Breakcore artists.

Seeing half of the original band and half of Strapping Young Lad was a real treat. Here’s hoping Bell/Cazares and Wolbers/Hererra will make up eventually.
