My introduction to Periphery was their appearance opening for Fear Factory. I was enthralled by the technical writing and instrumentation akin to Meshuggah, Textures and Tesseract. I put them on my to-check-out list. I finally got to listening to the album after it was released on Waldo Day.
The album is fairly good. Like most progressive metal, it takes a few listens to catch tones one might have missed the first time. A few electronic elements bring to mind Animals As Leaders.
The vocals range from growling akin to Textures to some instances of so-so metalcore-like singing that nevertheless fit with the exceptional vocal range. If for any of these reasons the vocals don’t suit you, there is an instrumental version of the album available.
I was delighted that a Desi, guitarist Misha Mansoor, is a member of this technical metal outfit. I also like the technologically-oriented graphic design of their swag. I may order a t-shirt or poster from these guys.
