I recently bought the HTC DROID Eris, an fairly old Android OS phone. I am currently shuffling through available software and organizing my dashboard. here are some interesting applications I found so far.
WordPress: I can update Mindqila from my phone. Though it will be difficult without a keyboard, so it won't happen often.
Music player: This phone may now be my primary mp3 player.
Mint: A finance-tracking application that allows users to see their account balances easily.
Meebo: my choice for multiple-protocol Instant Messaging on the phone.
Hardcopy: An instapaper application for the Android. I only expect to read short pieces out of this device since I have a reader already, and its screen doesn't burn my eyes with backlit white background like mobile screens do.
Games
Uniwar: A Wesnoth-like turn-based strategy with Starcraft-themed factions and units.
Archipelago: A real-time swarm strategy game with a WWII Pacific Air theme.
Cestos: A multiplayer game where the object is to get your opponents balls to drop into a hoop by colliding with them. when the turn ends, a mine is placed on the ball's last location, if a ball passes the mine, it explodes and pushes the ball.
Air Control: a pretty addictive drawing game where you direct the path of incoming planes to a landing strip by drawing a path by touch from a top-down perspective. You lose when two planes collide in the air.
And now, the catch. The machine's battery life is really short, the phone can't last a day without someplace to charge, I will need to see what is running that makes it drain so quickly –if it's not in fact a flaw in the machine. a task manager and keeping track of phone features (GPS, Wifi) may help.
This is a 3G phone. becuase 4G just had its welcoming party this week, 3G might fall to obsolescence soon. Also, Eris is not a priority for the Android 2.2 (Froyo) update. There was an alpha leak, but it's too buggy to use. I fear in the back of my mind that the Eris will get phased out very soon, so I'm already pining for newer, more powerful 3G Android phones. HTC's phone design is sharp, so I may stick with that brand.
Other than that, the Android OS is pretty cool, and it's otherwise great to use on devices that support it.
