E3 2008 Report

I just got back from Texas. It’s a wonder that I have time to check out what’s going on this week at E3 with summer classes and all . I’m positive that my next console purchase will be a handheld, so I want to see great games for the handheld consoles and a full-size qwerty keyboards.

Nintendo Press Conference: While I was away in Texas, I noticed a few kids distantly related to me with their own DS’s, I glanced at the game collection and was a little disappointed, lot of tie-in licensed stuff, nothing that an adult would like. On the topic of Wii peripherals, a few are getting just ridiculous.

Highlights:

  • Shawn White Snowboarding: It’s nice to know there is more to the Wii Fit board than telling people they’re fat.
  • Wii Sports Resort: Finally, a first-person kendo.
  • Wii Music: all of these tools and instruments have already been homebrewed, so this is nothing new.

Microsoft Press Conference Xbox 360 is still my home console of choice since a few of my favorite PC games have been ported to the system. I hope the hardware problems are fixed by the time I can afford it.

Highlights:

  • Fallout 3: one of my favorite franchises of all time gets some deserved publicity in the conference
  • Netflix: I’m a Netflix fanboy, I hope that the image quality of the instant movies is good on large screens.
  • Gears of War 2: I’m not too interested in this game, I just want to hear the protagonist say “bite my shiny metal ass!”

Sony Press Conference Hightlings: MGS4 has had a good run on the PS3. It’s still to expensive for me to consider it. PSP is a maybe if there is a keyboard peripheral that is compatible with it.

Highlights:

  • MAG
  • DC Universe Online

This year’s E3 seems kind of underwhelming to me. Nothing large or grand here like years past. Nintendo seems to present it’s content with the most effort despite their somewhat lackluster products (to a seasoned gamer that is).

Looking Forward to:

  • Red Alert 3
  • anything about Half Life
  • anything about Deus Ex 3
  • Fallout 3
  • Far Cry 2
  • Mirror’s Edge
  • I Am Alive
  • Empire: Total War
  • Valkyria Chronicles
  • Operation Flashpoint 2
